Awful Looking Rookie Card – 1979-80 Wayne Gretzky
The are certain cards I have always wanted to own and I would buy in any condition. I have a Dr. J rookie card from his ABA days which I only paid 5 bucks for, of course it’s a battered mess, but it’s still his rookie card. Well in my Craiglist searches I came across a Gretzky yesterday and bought it for 10 dollars. Here is the card:
I think this card was actually put in the spokes of a bicycle. The card is in terrible shape, but hey I now have my Gretzky rookie! If I had to grade this card it would definitely be sub 3. All the corners are rounded, 2 creases run the length of the card. There are various dents along the sides, and the photo is very subpar. In short, it’s terrible and I love it. If you have any card that are along the same line, send a pic of it to me (chemgod1000@yahoo.com) so we can poke fun at them. My next quest is a battered Jordan rookie (eBay had one for $112 last week. Let me know if you know of anyone with one in real bad shape.

I also have a wayne gretzky rookie,but in much better shape. the corners are rounded its a litle faded.If you want to take a look email me and I will send a pic?
That Gretzky looks like it was kept in a stack of cards bound by a rubber band. The pattern of the creases suggests that it was stepped on. The pressure point appears to have been at the center of the card, leading me to believe that it could have been someone’s heel. I did this a few times when I was younger, but never to a Gretky rookie.
I’d love to even have that beat up one from above.
