Again I find myself recouperationg from yesterday so when I pulled out the Tri Star Hidden Treasures pack, I think my initial reaction is one of disappointment.  These tend to be fairly bad and I have serious doubts that I can pull anything out of this pack.  It was issued in 2006 and the 4 chaser cards are 2 1933 Babe Ruth Goudey cards and 2 Babe Ruth Cracker Jacks cards.  Each card has a 1:1,000,000 chance of hitting it in the pack.  Here is what the pack looks like:

These packs are running for about a dollar on eBay, and that is what it cost me, so it’s all good.  Personally, I think these chaser blaster boxes are a big scam and you never ever get any good cards in the pack.  Tri-Star should be ashamed of even running it.  But they aren’t and we buy it so who is really to blame?  In this pack we have 5 cards and every pack should contain a star.  WHich is always the best part about these packs, who is considered the star? Lets rip it:

1. 1995 Upper Deck Mike Greenwell – OF – Red Sox – 400 – My favorite Greenwell story is that he was runner up to Canseco in the 1988 AL MVP award.  When Jose’s book came out and Jose admitted to using steroids, Greenwell send an appeal to MLB to try and disqualify Canseco from that year’s MVP award, meaning it would be his. It’s sad that during his 12 year career, this is the only thing I remember.

2. 1992 Fleer – Kevin Brown – P – Brewers – 174 – I don’t remember this Kevin Brown.  He came up in the Mets organization but then was traded to the Brewers.  He was a starter but very inept and left baseball after the 1993 season. 3 wins in 3 years.  So you have an idea of what he was all about.

3. 1991 Upper Deck - Duane Ward – P – Blue Jays – 581 – He had one amazing year in 1993 but then many bad injuries that basically took his career.  After that season he only pitched in 2 more for a total of 75 more appearences (He had 79 in 1993).  This card was when he was Henke’s set-up guy, he spent way too many years as the set-up guy and should have been closing much earlier in his career.

4. 1992 Pinnacle – Lenny Webster – C – Twins – 276 – Did you know that he played for 12 seasons? Here I thought he was a one and done kind of guy since this is his rookie card.  He was primarily a back-up catcher and never cleared more than 150 at bats a season.  I looked for any news on him in Wikipedia and found nothing.  So sadly that’s all I have to say about Lenny.

5. 2002 Fleer Triple Crown – Cliff Floyd – 1B – Marlins – 12 – I really don’t know how to sum up Cliff’s career so I will show you who he is compared to: Ray Lankford, Paul O’Neill, Danny Tartarbull, and Ryan Klesko.  You look over that list and other than Paul O’Neill, everyone else is semi spectacular, just like CLiff Floyd.

So that’s it.  Certainly a motley crew if I ever saw one.  I guess the star would either be Greenwell or Floyd, probably Floyd.  I knew it was going to be bad, but figured to have some fun with it anyway.  The rating will be only out of 4 catagories since Card Design can’t be looked at here.

Price of Pack – $1 – 1.0 stars – This is kind of like the grab bags, they used to have at the flea market. But for this one you only get 5 cards and they all suck.

Cards in Pack – 5 – 1.0 stars – I know this pack cost more than a dollar when it came out.  So to only get 5 cards and you know they are going to be awful, it really sucks.

Stars in pack – 0 – 0.0 stars – I don’t consider Greenwell or Floyd stars, so I have to give this catagory a 0.

Value of pack – worthless – 0.0 stars – Come on, seriously, do you really think any of these cards are worth anything other than as kindling paper?

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new leader in bad wax it comes out to 0.5 stars. Maybe I am just getting too cranky and too critical when I judge these, but I thought that this particular pack was incredibly awful!  Even worse than the hockey version of this which bottomed out at 0.7 stars. In the end, I think that this product is a dud and if you can stay away from it then by all means do so.  If you want any of these email me at superbadwax@yahoo.com.
