As a few of you know I have been slowly making my way through the 2008 Topps series one set.  Yesterday, fresh off my tax returns coming in, my wife and I decided to get ourselves some presents.  First we went to Sports Zone Cards in Cary, NC the store I have been telling you about.  I decided that I wanted to get some boxes.  I got a Topps series one box (36 packs / 10 cards per pack) and a box of Upper Deck Series one (16 packs / 20 cards per pack, guarantee of one autograph and two memorabilia cards).  I was hoping that since I already had about 160 cards towards the set, that I would be able to complete it.  Well My wife and I opened it and guess what?  I got about 91% of the set, and with my other cards I was able to get it to 93% but I am still short 22 cards.  So I am here to beg for the remaining cards I need:

1, 11, 36, 50, 51, 60, 67, 68, 102, 132, 144, 237, 244, 253, 293, 301, 309, 310, 312, 320, 326

To anyone who gets me any of these cards, I will send you any cards you need for 2008 Upper Deck or 2008 Topps plus one insert from Topps (since I have a ton of them).  When I complete the set, I will do a post everyday of every player and give my perspective on how they will do this year.  Also, I will make fun of their cards because that is what I do best.  On a separate note, I also bought a pack of 2007 Artifacts Baseball.  She had told me that 2 of the relic cards were gone (out of 3), but I decided to go for it anyways and look what I got:

It’s not going to bring in a mint on eBay, but I like Bagwell as a player, so this is a real nice hit for me and one that I’m going to enjoy in my collection.  See sometimes you can not pack search and still get a nice pull!  Stacy at  Sports Zone Cards is the best guys and she will get you what you want for a very good price.  For example 2008 Topps box was $50, on eBay the best I can do is $45 but with $8 shipping.  2008 Upper Deck would run me $75, on eBay it would be $61 + $10 to ship.  So she is very fair with her pricing and she charges exact rates to ship.  Give her store a shot, maybe one of the few honest dealers out there. As soon as I open the UD box I will make a list of the cards I need, then do a card by card review of the set, just like Topps.

i was hoping someone could help me out with this question i want to collect topps 2008 baseball( reg. set) but i’m not into inserts, parallells, foil.. etc… just the base set, does anyone know if the retail flow packs that have just 7 cards and a stick of gum just have base cards included, i’m thinking it might be cheaper and make more sense to buy maybe 2 boxes of flow packs i beleive its 24 packs per box, than it would be to buy 1 box of hobby co (actually i’m thinking it might take 2 hobby boxes to maybe complete series 1). i’ve found flow packs for .99 each and i’ve seen prices for hobby box 36/packs for about $60.00 sure i’m going to get doubles, but with all the extra cards thrown into the hobby boxes don’t i stand a better ,and maybe cheaper chance of completeing series 1 by buying 2 boxes of reatail flow packs, any info would be great thanks!

Brian, the best thing to do is go out and get one hobby box. It runs about $50 and you should get about 90% (at least) of the set. Then post on here or the badwax forum which cards you’ll need and we can take care of what you are missing. I have tried to do a collection from the retail packs but about half way through the process you start getting a ton of doubles. In the end I think it will be cheaper to go the hobby box route. Of course you could always hit ebay and pick up the whole set for $15, but what fun is that? The other thing you can do is start collecting the 2007 Topps series one set which you can get a hobby box for $30. Generally if you can wait one year the price of the product goes down a lot!

chemgod, thanks for the info, beacuse $50 was the highest i would go for a box, i was thinking the same thing about buying last years set. i stopped collecting for a variety of reasons, price , too many insert sets, it turned into a form of gambling to me to if you wanted to try to collect a FULL set back in the late 80′s and 90′s and it still is i guess ,i think all those insert and chase cards took alot of fun out of it for me . i think the thing is to go back to collecting and build complete base sets like when i was a kid and not buy cards thinking i was going to make money off of them in years to come!

That is exactly why I started Operation Topps. I stopped collecting when I went off to college in 1989. SO I got the 89 set, but then, that was it until about 1997, I picked it up again for about a year. The insert part was ridiculous though. In the Hobby box I averaged about 1 insert per pack. I think I ended up with a total of 40 inserts for the 36 packs. I only got about 20 doubles in the whole box. Please check out the http://www.Sportszonecards.com. You’d have to call her to place and order, she is out of NC but will ship and her price for a box is $50. Let her know that I referred her to you (if you decide to go that route).
