I just finished typing that number 64 and realized that I have been doing this run for over 2 months now. Can I officially call myself a 1986 Topps expert at this point? I have reviewed over 80% of the set on a card by card basis. Over the last few packs, I have found a lot of cards. More than I expected to find. I can almost guarantee that this pack will bring that to a screeching halt. The thing is, I know stat wise, finding a pack with 12 non doubles in it shouldn’t happen at this point. Actually I should start pulling packs with no non doubles in them soon enough. Anyways, let’s get to pack number 64.
1. Giants Leaders – 516 The Dean of the Giants is Greg Minton. The offensive leaders are Chilli Davis and Dan Gladden. The pitching leaders are Mark Davis and Mike Krukow.
2. Pete Rose – 1963-1966 – 2 – I think I have all of these cards now. Pete was just not an attractive guy when he was young was he. I still like the 1963 cards though depicting the 4 dismembered heads of the rookie stars. It’s just so weird to see heads floating like that. Did they (at Topps) really think this was a great looking card? Well it was the 60′s what do we know what they were on.
3. Andy Hawkins – P – Yankees – 478 – Now I should like him, since he was a Yankee at one point in his career, but the truth was, he was such a horrible pitcher, that he actually couldn’t win on his best day (threw a losing no hitter). He showed some flashes of brilliance, like in 1985 when he went 18-8/3.15/1.29, but in 1986 he went 10-8/4.30/1.40 and started his slide into mediocraty.
4. Randy O’Neal – P – Tigers – 73 – Double first reviewed, in pack 7.
5. Toby Harrah – SS/2B – Rangers – 535 – Double first reviewed, in pack 36.
6. Scott Fletcher – SS/3B – White Sox – 187 – Double first reviewed, in pack 20.
7. Tony Gwynn – OF – Padres – 10 – Double first reviewed, in pack3.
8. Lenn Sakata – 2B – Orioles – 446 – Double first reviewed, in pack 22.
9. Jim Pankovits – 2B/3B – Astros – 618 – Double first reviewed, in pack 11.
10. Steve McCatty – P – A’s – 624 – Double first reviewed, in pack 40.
11. Joel Skinner – C – White Sox – 239 – Double first reviewed, in pack pack 40.
12. Pete Rose 1971-1974 – 4 – Double first reviewed, in pack 48.
13. Daryl Sconiers – 1B – Angels – 193 – Double first reviewed, in pack 7.
14. Blue Jays Leaders – 96 – Double, first reviewed in pack 48.
15. Rick Dempsey – C – Orioles – 358 – Double, first reviewed in pack3.
Overall this was a bit of a downer. I expected more out of the pack, but in reality, I knew this one was coming. I’ll give this pack a 2.0 star rating, mainly for the Rose and Gwynn cards. It’s tough doing these reviews on the weekend, especially with the new puppy, who is doing quite well and has reached the 30 lb mark. only 120 more pounds to go! See everyone back here tomorrow.
