Player’s Name: Andy Pettite
Player’s Position: P – Starter
Player’s Current Team: New York Yankees
Price I Paid for the Card: This was part of a six for six swap I did with Mario over at Waxheavan.
Set it’s from: 2008 Upper Deck
What it’s Worth: Beckett has it listed for $10.00.
Why I like this card: First off, I commend Andy for having the guts to not only admit that he used steriods but he also admitted to using steroids at other times as well. I can definitely respect someone who isn’t afraid to put his head on the chopping block. If only Clemens could learn to do the same thing. Actually if anything, we learned that the public is very willing to forgive when you are up front with your mistakes. I have been a Pettite fan since the first day he was called up to the majors from Columbus. I was even a fan of him when he was an Astro (hated that the Yankees didn’t offer to resign him quicker than they did. Did you know that in his entire 14 year career there was only one season he didn’t win less than 12 games? He has almost two times as many wins as losses and just past the 200 win mark.
Why it’s a Cheap Hit: Look, you might not like him, you might even hate him for being a steroid user. But love him or hate him he’s a solid pitcher and is going to be a member of my Hall of Very Good soon enough. He will never get the respect he deserves and in my mind even though he has admitted to steroid use, I believe him when he said it was for rehabbing. I don’t know why I do being that cheating is cheating, but I have a feeling Andy was pretty honest with us even giving up information he didn’t have to give up. The card I traded Mario couldn’t have cost me more than $2.00 so overall I would call this a cheap hit.
Will if ever be worth more? He’ll never get into the Hall of Fame because of his steroid use, so I’d have to say no.
