Musings of a Card Collector

Razor Makes Another Anouncement . . .

Razor Collectibles announced the signing of four more prospects. Which means they now have seven of the top 40 players from this years draft locked up to 3 year deals. After emailing the CEO of the company I get the feeling that at some point they are going to have most of the class signed and their first product may prove to be something special. They are apparently going after Tristar’s niche and with the star power they signed I think Tristar might have some issues soon. So far I haven’t heard anything from Tristar about them signing anyone. But you can bet by next year the class of 2009 will have card bidding wars. The newest members are:

  • Ethan Martin – pick 15 – Dodgers
  • Casey Kelly – pick 30 – Red Sox (Pat Kelly’s son)
  • Jordan Lyles – pick 38 – Astros
  • Brett DeVall – pick 40 – Braves

I was told that during the Nationals, the card company is going to have a forum with collectors to see what they want from a minor league card. My guess is since the guy that is in charge (Scott Jordan) was the President of Just Minors, you are going to see products along the lines of Just Minors. Personally I loved the Mystery Jersey packs. Where you would get a minor league star’s jersey (full size) which had been autographed, plus two autographed cards. Te price tag was steep ($175) but I’ve seen (on more than a few occasions) Fernando Martinez and Jay Bruce Jerseys pulled. I think that would be more special than a $225 box of stadium club don’t you?

In either event this is quite a coupe and if Tristar doesn’t do something soon, they will be missing out on what could be an incredibly gifted class. Just in case you forgot, Razor also has these four under contract:

  • Tim Beckham – pick 1 – Rays
  • Kyle Skipworth – pick 6 – Marlins
  • Reese Havens – pick 22 – Mets
  • David Adams – pick 106 – Yankees
