Last night is the first time in a long time that I can remember two major events happening on the same night. The last time I remembered something like that was when Dave Stewart and Fernando Valenzuela threw no-no’s on the same night. Well last night we had a no-no and a 3 homer run by the same player game. Both of which don”t happen too often. Since All this happened around the same time I figured I would create a report about all of it.
Frederick Keys (A+) No Hitter
Last night 3 Keys pitchers combined on a no hitter. The starter was Brandon Erbe, who has been decent this year as a starter. He has a record of 9-10/4.19 but a WHIP of 1.14 and a OPA of 0.219, meaning he gives up too many runs, but most are stemming from the walks. I would definitely keep an eye on him since anytime you can find a pitcher that has a low WHIP and OBA is a keeper. This is something that he has done his entire minor league career. The other two pitchers to complete the no hitter were Ryan Oullette and Fredy Deza. Ouellette has had a pretty rough season and may never make the majors but Deza has been very polished this year and should continue to advance up the minor league ladder.
Casper Wells goes deep three times in one game
Last week Casper Wells (AA -Eastern) hit for the cycle, this week he went and slugged three homers in one game. He is certainly having a historic month. Last night against the Harrisburg Senators, Casper hit three homers and knocked in five RBIs. He is a potential 5 tool player that the Tigers selected in the 14th round in the 2005 draft. So far this season in two levels of minor league ball, he has hit 0.261/20/62/23. I don’t expect his name to be a secret for long, he has everything needed to make it to the bigs by the end of next season. The Tigers need to infuse some young talent into that lineup and Casper might be that guy in 2010. A quick search of eBay yielded no autograph cards. But you can bet anything that he will have one later this year or early next.
