Roughs on the Diamond – Dan Robertson
The old saying goes, “Records are meant to be broken.” Well 22 year old Dan Robertson did just that this year, he broke a 36 year old Northwest League record. The first year player out of Oregon State picked up his 114th hit of the season last night as the Eugene Emeralds beat the Everett Aquasox. Yesterday he was named the Northwest League MVP.
Robertson was drafted in June as the 1005th overall selection in the 33rd round. How is that for some value? This season for the Eugene Emeralds he went 0.380/3/45/20 in what can only be described as an amazing season. Not only was he the league’s MVP but he was also a post season All-Star. Known mainly as a contact hitter in college, the Padres took a draft and see approach towards him. Their scouting paid off big. Next year look to see Dan in low A Ft. Wayne to start the season and if he is anything like what he did in the NWL, expect him in high A Lake Elsinore by the end of next season.
It’s still too early to project what kind of hitter he is going to be or if he has what it takes to make it to the majors. One thing is clear, for this season he simply dominated, if he can do that again and again, look for him in the majors by 2010. There are no baseball cards of him as of yet and I don’t even think he will be included in the Bowmam DPP or the Donruss Elite sets. He might not have a card until next year’s Tri Star Projections. So keep him in mind when looking for prospect cards next year.
