Now I get a lot more failures than I put up here. Most are players that don’t return anything, or just returned an unsigned card. Some as you have seen include a price list. The response I got from Earl Campbell blew me away.
I am not naive to think that every player should sign out of obligation. But if you don’t want to sign the card, then either a) throw it away, b) put it back in the SASE and mail it back to me, or c) tell me what I need to do to get your autograph. What Earl Campbell did was inexcusable. You can make excuses for him, but if he didn’t want to sign it, then just throw it away or return to sender or whatever, don’t waste the card by putting a big x on it.
Just to give you a little background, when I send out these autograph requests, everything is handwritten and every card is different as I tend to explain my connection to the player or how I feel about how the player did in his or her career. The fact I have gotten back over 60 autographs should tell you, that I know what I’m doing. I just don’t understand what went wrong here. I know my letter was flattering because I was a huge fan and tried to get that across in my letter.
So let it be a warning to all ball players, nothing pisses off a fan more than your spurn of an autograph request. I WAS a huge fan of Campbell, now I don’t care about him at all. All I can say is you are now on my shit list (whatever that is worth). I’m just pissed is all, I knew that I would get something like this sooner or later. Just a low class move from a clearly pissed off ex jock. If you are reading this Earl, keep pumping out this response to autographs . . . soon enough no one will want them or have anything to do with you.

What a jag!!
Wow, what a dick.
You know, maybe someone else did it? I am just shocked.
Campbell was a guy who REFUSED to let his picture appear on a Topps card for many, many, many years. That should tell you a lot about the guy, because this was an era where there were ONLY Topps Football cards being produced. His rookie card was it during his playing career until the very end, when he had a Pro-Set card after he left the Oilers.

Great player, not so great person. Like quite a few “super-stars”. Funny, the coolest ex-players I’ve ever encountered are the guys who didn’t get all the pub as players.
That’s unacceptable!
On the other hand, maybe Earl is dumber than a box of hammers and that is actually his signature.
More than likely, he’s just a bitter ex-jock, who clearly doesn’t care for the fans who helped make his bank account fatter.
Earl isnt in the best of health either, but Im with Mario on this, he wasnt the nicest guy to begin with.
Guys,
If Earl truly did this, then there is really no excuse for that. I agree, if a player doesn’t want to sign it just throw it away or return it unused. I’ve never met him in person, so I can’t vouch for his temperment. But, on the other hand maybe there should be some benefit of the doubt given. I have personally had a recent success sending him an 8×10 to get signed, which was returned signed as requested in about 2 months. So, in this case it might have been a secretary or someone else who did it. In any case, I wouldn’t get too spun over the axle over this. I’ve been collecting TTM for 9 years now, and I’ve learned not to take things personally in this hobby.
Wow… that is pretty douche-tastic!
man what a low down son of a bitch, that is pretty much the coldest thing i have ever heard of using ttm, even worse than the dreaded price list, he must have an ego as big as this world but a brain the size of a peanut, what a douchebag!!!!
That’s nuts! I can’t imagine what would inspire anyone to do that — whether it was actually Campbell or one of his people. Seriously!
Sounds like a loser to me.
I think that it his way of saying that he does not sign “autograph cards”. I’ve heard he signs TTM sent to his meat products place. I’d try again with a cheap modern card of him and I bet that you will see a difference.
Amazing. He signed two cards for me about 8 months ago, a regular card and a custom index card. I wonder what got up his ass since then. Perhaps it’s just something like zman40 said.
If you’re such a big fan why didn’t you just send one of his real cards? He probably didn’t want to sign that ugly, blank card.
If you look at the cards that featured Earl Campbell, none of them had a nice place to sign.
We do not know who did that. You could have did it because ,you did not get what you wanted after it was returned to you .It is your word and that is all, trying to make a big deal out of some small thing .I do not see anything to back you up ,just because you said it don’t make it so.
“then just throw it away or return to sender or whatever, don’t waste the card by putting a big x on it”
How is putting an X on it any more of a waste than throwing it away? It might be more upsetting to you, but either way you lose the card. It was probably to let you know that he got it but didn’t sign things like that. True, he could have just returned it unmarked, but like others have stated, maybe it was someone else and not Earl himself.
Changed his name to x. Pretty obvious.
