Player: Jack Morris
Set: 1978 Topps
Card Number: 703
Why is This Card a Must Have?: A lot of people feel that Morris is a Hall of Fame guy. I am not one of those people. I just think his ERA and WHIP were too high, even though he had three 20 win seasons and 13 seasons where he won 14 or more games. The big troubling fact is that he has 11 seasons where he lost 11 or more games. His career record of 254 – 186 puts his winning percentage at 58%. Which would make him one of the most losing pitchers to enter the Hall. Was he a very good pitcher? Yes, there were times he was dominant. But he just wasn’t that big game pitcher. They always say if you had to win one game and you could pick any pitcher, Jack Morris isn’t coming to your mind. That said, he was surely an icon for the Detroit Tigers and during his major league tenure, he was a well liked and well spoken guy. It’s for those reasons that I think this is a must have card for your collection.
On a Scale of 1 to 10, How Must Have Is This Card?: A 3, he is definitely a very good pitcher and one of the better ones of the 80s, but he shouldn’t get the attention that a Hall of Fame pitcher would get. Three just sounds about right to me. His card can be purchased on eBay for around a dollar.
