The Definitive Collection (Hockey Edition) – 1970-71 Gilbert Perreault
Player: Gilbert Perreault
Position: Center
Set: 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee and Topps
Card Number: 131 and 131 respectively
Why is These Cards are Must Have?: Gil had an interesting start to his career, the Canadians were supposed to draft first in the year he was drafted, but Buffalo being an expansion team actually had the first selection. If he had been selected to the Canadians that year he would have sat in the minors forever given the talent that was on that team. Luckily he went to a startup franchise and became part of the famous French Connection (Perreault, Rick Martin, and Renee Robert). Over his long 17 year career, Gil piled up 512 goals (35th all time) and 814 assists (25th all time) for a total of 1326 (29th all time). His 16.6 career shooting percentage is good for 69th all time. He won not only made a Stanley Cup appearance (lost to Philly 4-2), but also a Calder Memorial Trophy (ROY) and a Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (Gentleman). He was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990, which was well deserved.
On a Scale of 1 to 10, How Must Have Are These Cards?: An 8, I think if he had played in a bigger market this would easily be a 9 or 10 but as is he is definitely one of the top 30 players to have ever played the game. You would think a title like that would make his cards worth a lot. Unfortunately that isn’t the case. You can find these cards for about $25 for the O-Pee-Chee version and $10 for the Topps version on eBay (more if graded).

Perreault played in Buffalo for his whole career and never won a Stanley Cup. He played in one Cup Finals, but did not win.
My bad, I updated the post. I forgot that he lost to the Bernie Parrent led Flyers that year.
