Player: Roberto Alomar
Set: 1988 Topps traded, Fleer update, Score update Dunruss: the rookies and Donruss
Card Number: 4T, 122U, 105T, 35 and 34 respectively
Why are These Cards a Must Have?: I decided to list update versions of the player as well as regular issue. In 1988 his only regular issue card was through the Donruss Rated Rookies insert. After his 1988 season where he went 0.266/9/41/26, and finished 5th in ROY voting, he was in every update set. The most valuable of all his cards is the Score Rookie and Update version. This is the set to own of that year. We all know how overproduced the sets were in 1988, well the Score Rookies set was the least produced sets in the late 80s. As for Roberto, at some point his 2700+ hits, 12 All Stars, 10 Gold Gloves, 5 Silver Slugger, an ALCS MVP, and an All Star MVP award is going to elect him into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Not sure if he is a first ballot, especially because of the spitting incident. I expect him to go in on either his 2nd or 3rd ballot.
On a Scale of 1 to 10, How Must Have Are These Cards?: A 7, one of the best 2nd basemen, both offensively and defensively of the current generation. He’s going in not because of his offensive prowess, which was very good but because he was such a stud defensively. You can find these card for no more than $1 (except the Score card which runs about $3-$4) on eBay (more if graded).
