Here is one that made me think of Adam from Sports Cards Uncensored.  This is what he meant by his original Joe Collector term.

12000+ BASEBALL CARDS IN BINDERS W/SLEEVES $1100 OBO

I have a very large Baseball card collection that I wish to sell. I have recently gone through it and it contains 12176 cards in 11 3″ 3 ring binders and one collectors box. All cards are in sleeves and in mint condition. I have a list on Beckett.com and it prices the collection at $2,216.13. I can let you know if it has specific cards that you are looking for and provide you access to the list. There are 627 rookie cards in the collection. The cards are from 1984 to 1994 and include all the major makers (Fleer, Topps, Score, Upper Deck, Bowman, etc.) There are a few earlier cards (Topps), but the vast majority are from the time frame above. They have been kept in storage in boxes in the binders in a smoke free home. If interested please contact me with questions and I will be happy to respond. Serious inquires only please.

Thanks for looking.

My First Take: There is no way this is for real.  I mean I read about these kinds of guys through Sports Cards Uncensored blog <link>.  I didn’t think I would ever run into them. Especially on Craigslist, I wouldn’t expect any of them to sell their precious MOJO.  Next, the value he has listed under total value is ridiculous 2,216.13.  I guessing he came up with this number by entering in his commons as well.  Who does that?  Joe Collector does!  Next, 12 books that look full of cards and one shitty Score set, and all you have is 2200 worth of cards?  Sad, just sad.  I’m offering $120, let’s see his head explode.

The Emails:

Me: That is quite a collection, is it still available?

CI (Craiglist Idiot): This is one of the best collections you’ll ever find on Craigslist.  Everything is organized by year and player name.  Plus I have a database of every card and it’s value.  When would you like to come over and see it? (No freaking way did he just write that)

Me: Can you tell me some of the higher end cards in your collection?  Also what percentage of the collection are commons?

CI: It’s like asking me to pick a favorite child, but you have Cansecos, McGwires, Bonds, Palmeiros, basically every rookie from that era, I have 4 or 5 cards of. As far as the commons go, I would put it at 80% of the collection.   Each card has been put into plastic sleves and placed into the binders, they are in mint condition. Certainly worth every penny I am asking if not even more.  I already have several bids in on this but I really want to get 1100.

Me: 1100 seems a bit steep for cardsfrom this era, I was hoping to get it for less.

CI: You’re crazy, you’ll never find this kind of collection anywhere on the web for the price I am asking.  Why don’t you come by and take a look, I’m sure that you’ll agree after you see it. (He called me crazy and wants me to come by, really?)

Me: I don’t think I’m crazy, it’s just what you are asking for it just too hig for what I’m getting Beckett inflates these cards so high it’s ridiculous, get off your high horse and take my $120 for it.  I think a penny a card is a good value.

CI: I said in my ad serious inquiries only, or did you not read that, it’s morons like you who bring this hobby down.  I’m looking for 50% of book, nothing wrong with that.  What you are offering is an insult.  If you aren’t going to be serious well I guess we are done here. (Amazing, he is still trying to sell me, even after I insulted him twice).

Me: You have no clue that what you are selling is completely over produced and worthless cards and are considered junk wax, just watch this video and you can find out the real price of the cards you are trying to sell: http://voiceofthecollector.blogspot.com/2008/10/long-awaited-junk-wax-how-to.html. It has helped me countless time try to figure out values of cards.

CI: Fuck you asshole. (Finally I pissed him off).

End of Emails

My Final Take: I’m impressed he continued to sell me after I insulted him a bunch of times.  That blew me away.  I understand what he’s trying to do, but come on who is paying more than 10% of Beckett of any card from that era.  80% commons and you want 1100 that is freaking crazy.  I think if he knew where I lived he would come over and bash me over the head with each binder.

I just emailed a guy about a 1990 Topps Robin Yount All Star. He only wants $1000. Yes that one grand. But hey, it’s 100% mint.

Ahh, I see you are getting uppity now with your people. What a dumbass.

  3. His binders and page sleeves are worth more that the cards they hold.

  4. Tribecards says:

Oh, if he could have lasted just two more emails, he would have won $100 on Boiling Points!

It’s hard to understand people like that. I knew the bulk of the stuff I had from that era was mostly crap and almost impossible to sell back in 1993. That was 16 years ago.

I’m torn between feeling sorry for people who just don’t understand that the stuff they bought years and years ago is essentially worthless and just being outraged that people would have the nerve to try and get that much for it.

  6. VOTC says:

I think $120 was a little high on the offer, maybe a $1.20.

What if he had agreed to your offer of $120?

If that ever happens, I might be able to split the cost with you if you burn it all in their driveway on video.
    LMAO

Take that Joe Collector. I wonder if when they realize what you are about to do if he give the money back to save his “precious” collection

funny how they mention the cansecos… yea those are pretty hot right now.

  8. Chris says:

I feel bad that he put so much time in organizing them and building a database. Ouch.
