Mt First Take: I’ve seen something like this before but when I went back to check it turned out to be from Colorado.  Clearly these three cards are not $2000 worth of cards.  Thruth be told, I am not even sure what sets they are from.  The Ryan “rookie” card I believe is from1991 Pacific set.  Obviously though it is not his rookie card.  The Rodriguez card seems to be a Fleer, but not even close to worth $500 (even to an M’s fan). The first card is a Pepsi promotional card.  Either way we are looking at no more than $5 worth of cards.  So that’s what I will offer for all three cards.  Should be a good one.

The Emails:

Me: I noticed you had three cards for sale on Craigslist.  I don’t know what sets they cam from, can you give me some info on them?

Craigslist Idiot (CI): What do you need to know? (I’m pretty sure I just told him, but lets do it again.)

Me: Well what sets are they from and what years?

CI: The Ryan is from his rookie year on the Mets, I think the Rodriguez card is his rookie and the Griffey card is one I got while I was collecting cards as a kid. (OK that was worthless)

Me: I have never seen that Ryan card, is it special? Also the Griffey one is one I’ve never seen either.

CI: I don’t know, like I said I collected them as a kid, hate to have to give them up, but I have bills to pay. (Not going to unload any bills with these cards.)

Me: How did you end up with the prices you are asking?

CI: Seemed like fair prices to me.  I think they are even worth more than what I have them listed for, like I said before I hate to even sell them, but I need money to pay the bills. Do you want to come over to see them? Oh and I only take cash.

Me: Is the price negotiable? These prices seem a bit high for me. (Here’s the set-up)

CI: These cards are collectors items, ive seen them go for big bucks on eBay.  I’ll come down a little, like if you want all 3 I guess I would come down to $1500.

Me: You see I was thinking about $5, I did some research to come up with this figure.  I went on eBay and found these two auctions:

Griffey card can be found here :<link>

Ryan card can be found here: <link>

and although I can’t find that A-Rod card, I guess I’d be willing to give you $3 for it.

CI: No way, you probably created those pages to try and scam me.  The price stands.

Me: But I  just proved to you that your cards are worthless.  I take that back not completely worthless since I’d give you $5 for them.  When trying to evaluate the price of cards from that era, I found a great video that illustrates just how much those cards are worth: http://voiceofthecollector.blogspot.com/2008/10/long-awaited-junk-wax-how-to.html. After watching it, you’ll understand how much your cards are worth.  So $5 cash and I can pick it up tonight?

CI: How can you try to scam me like that? I know they are worth thousands.

Me: They aren’t they are fire kindling. If these are the last of your collection taht you were hoping to cash in on, I’m sorry to say that it’s worth a Big Gulp, a candy bar and a lottery ticket (if that).

End of emails.

My final take: It is truely incredible how people refuse to believe that their stuff is worth more than it really is.  A quick trip to eBay would have told this person that his cards were worthless.  He seemed genuinely surprised that his cards were worthless, so I’m assuming that he didn’t do his homework.  But really, how much can a card of Griffey jr and Sr, wearing Pepsi gear be really worth? His Nolan Ryan rookie was a couple of decades too late.  I’m still not sure how much that Rodriguez card is worth but I’m assuming it’s in the $2 – $3 range.

  1. No way does this guy really think they are worth thousands. I think he knows they’re junk. In fact, he may have already seen the Ryan auction on Ebay before you linked it. The Ebay auction inexplicably states that the Ryan card is a FUTURE HALL OF FAME ROOKIE CARD giving the impressions (in a round about, confusing manner) that this is an actual rookie card. I have no idea why anyone would describe this as a rookie card in any way shape or form. So, for 2 of the same worthless 1991 Pacific card to be described as a “rookie card” on different auctions at the same time seems unlikely to me.

That Rodriguez appears to be from 1996 Upper Deck but I’m not sure bout the blue coloring. The Upper Deck cards were gold.

I don’t mind people asking for book value for cards but idiots who inflate prices and think they have more than they really do make me mad.

  3. Holy Hitter says:

Who knew that when I used to go to the grocery store and buy all of those Nolan Ryan Express Pacific Cards that one day they could be worth thousands of dollars to me?

Seriously, those cards are not even worth the $5 you were offering him and he knows they are worth thousands?

I want to know if someone ever pays for these listings at the prices asked.

    Wow, that guy infuriates me.

The corners of the Griffey Card look like they have seen better days as well…

The amount of stupidity is astounding. You created fake auctions of those 3 specific cards just to trick the guy. And the way to verify that is…*ding* look them up on eBay yourself jackass. I hope he’s just a scammer because I’d hate to think that guy was really that stupid.

  7. Gellman says:

Dude, I know I create eBay pages all the time to scam people. You know me.

  8. Kerry says:

Wow!!! I don’t even know what to say about this. Well, I guess “idiot” would clearly sum it up. It is truly amazing that people like him exist.

  9. ig4mer says:

Wow it is amazing how much of a idiot that guy is. Those cards are barely worth to me a buck each.

He’s outright lying about the condition of the cards and that the Ryan card is a rookie. The prices he are asking are unreal and have to be a joke.

I also like that even if he thought the cards are worth thousands that there are no protection and he probably ship in a plain letter envelop.

How did that jackball even log onto the internet? I love these posts.

  11. Eggrocket says:

Sometimes your CIs just seem to be dreamers who got ahold of some junk wax and picked up a copy of Beckett and actually bought into the inflated “book prices.” (Sure an ’87 Topps Bonds rookie “books” for $10 even though nobody’d pay that for it.) I can see (and even forgive) a naive old grandmotherly sort who’s looked at “book” or asked her antiquing friends what something’s worth. Afterall, every seller only needs one buyer. They might be idiots, but they’re not necessarily trying to scam people.

This guy, however, ENRAGES me! That Ryan card “books” for 10 cents in SCD. (Which should make actual market value somewhere between 1 and 3 cents.) NOBODY can be that stupid. Some of your other SIs are just naive (or, like I said, dreamers). This guy is actively scamming people.

  12. B. Wags says:

My favorite part of the whole thing is that he will only take the money in cash, because most people I know carry $2000 dollars on them. What a scammer.

  13. Yeah, this guy has got to be the most dishonest yet.
