My First Take: It’s not that this one is expensive or even grossly over priced, it’s that he is trying to mislead people into believing that he is giving them a deal. His “researched prices” are buy it nows on eBay which I believe has set its minimum to $1. Clearly there aren’t any cards in this lot worth more than 50 cents, including the Clemens and Ripken. Plus the ones he has white back listed are cards he cut out of the box. This lot may be worth about $2, and I would consider that a fair price. I mean the set is only worth only about $6 on eBay and this isn’t even half the set. Don’t you love that he values the leaders cards at anywhere from $1 – $3.49?
The emails:
Me: Sweet collection, are the cards still available?
Craigslist Idiot (CI): yes they are. Are you interested in a few cards or the whole lot?
Me: I guess a few of the cards. How much would you want for the Gladden, O’Brien, Beurenger, Higuera, Mullniks, Pena, Deshaise and White Sox Leader cards?
CI: Well as you can see in my ad, there worth anywhere between 1 to 4 dollars on eBay. So how about a dollar a card for $8. The Berenguer is worth the most but I would give it to you for a dollar.
Me: That seems a bit steep for those guys, I mean we aren’t talking Hall of Fame players, plus like the Leaders card is a common isn’t it?
CI: What do you mean common?
Me: It’s considered a worthless card. I’m looking in my price guide and cards like these are priced at a penny each.
CI: Go on eBay and enter any one of these cards I’m sure you’ll see that they run about a dollar each. So would you like to come over? Cash only of course.
Me: I went on eBay and I found that I could get the whole set of cards for $6 <link>, since you don’t even have half the set, why don’t I just offer $3 for the entire lot of cards since you know on eBay, that’s about what they are worth.
CI: I’m not selling these as a set, it’s a lot of cards, So if you want this lot I can go as low as $25. Interested?
Me: But I just showed you that I can get the entire set for $6 which would include all the cards in your lot plus over 400 more. Why would I pay $25 for something I can get for $6? Plus I get more cards. What if I up my offer to $3.25 would we have a deal?
CI: Listen buddy, I don’t know what you are trying to pull here, but if you are trying to rip someone off, you should look elsewhere, I have had a lot of interest in these cards and I’m not about to let it go for that cheap.
Me: You are trying to scam people by having them believe these cards are worth more because he found Buy It Now prices of a dollar on eBay for them. Forget the fact that a dollar is now the minimum Buy It Now price. Believe me if the minimum price was a penny these cards would all be at a penny, you should be ashamed of tryting to con people.
CI: The only thing I am ashamed of is trying to sell you the cards and wasting my time. You clearly are just looking to harass people.
Me: No I am clearly trying to educate you on just how worthless these cards are, if you don’t believe me, watch this video illustrating it’s worth <link>.
CI: You really are a worthless piece of garbage. Quit wasting my time.
Me: I will if you quit trying to con people.
End Of Emails.
Final Take: Another one of the “You don’t understand how good of a deal this is” guys. Please, if I gave him a penny a card it would be generous. People just don’t understand how worthless 1987 Topps really is, I mean I can even get the Bonds rookie for under a buck if I wanted to. What a con artist huh? Thanks again to Joe from Reds Cards for this one.

rance mulliniks.. Now that is a name I have not heard in a long time.. I love the Craigslist Idiot and get bummed out when I check each day only to see there is not a new one up.. Thanks for all the good laughs.
the “white back” cards would actually be from the Traded set, hence the T suffix in the card numbers. pretty hilarious, though. if I saw those cards on the ground I’m not sure I’d even bother to pick them up.
“The Berenguer is worth the most but I would give it to you for a dollar.”
Is this guy for real?
The white backs could also be from the Tiffany set. I’d probably pay $30 for the Tiffany set (they’re very nice cards), but for a stack of regular ’87 Topps? It’s one of my favorite sets ever, but hell no. Oh wait… I’m the one that bought two boxes of the stuff last summer. Still, my point remains.
I have to admit. That was the most polite and well written emailer yet. Kind of a letdown.
I deal with these guys all the time up here. I actually had a card shop owner tell me a stack of 40 2002 Authentix, commons, was 80¢ a card. And that was a STEAL!
So because my 1997 Yankees team set is still one of my favorite team sets ever does that make me lame.. I’ll sell it to you all for $30.00. Hehe just kidding. Its my favorite, because I remember how many packs I opened looking for those cards. I bought the Mattingly in Woolworths as a loose card for a buck.
Blows me away people just cant believe this stuff is worth zilch.. Keep it up!!!
he is one load his mother should have swallowed
Too tame!!!! Bring back THE LORD B!!!!!
