My son and I went to the Papbelbon signing today. It was disappointing. We got there just after 9:30am, in the first 55 people there. We were told that the only autographes would be the picture that Modell’s gave this was the contract that he was under. Those of us who came early and waited received a disappointing pre-autographed photo. Many people in line after those of us towards the front of the line were getting baseball cards, balls, t-shirts, etc. autographed. This was not a case of running out of pictures there were plenty of pictures on the table one hour into the session. It’s not just that those at the back of the line had the rules bent the picture was not a good picture and has Modell’s logo on it. Very disappointing.
Glad I’m not the only one bothered by the Papelbon signing. When they did a line count my sister and I were right around 100. I was going to bring some of my Papelbon merchandise to be signed, but respected the rules and left my photos at home. People in front of us had baseballs and jerseys and we were thinking to ourselves ‘they’re not going to let them get that signed are they?’ and sure enough they did. To make it worse it seemed that Papelbon was slightly embarrassed to sign that Modell’s photo. I can’t say I blame him for that. It’s even worse to hear that the early arrivals got pre autographed photos. At least I had my hat that he could sign, but I really wish they would’ve either not allowed anyone to get outside merchandise signed or given everyone the opportunity to quickly/easily get a baseball/photo to be signed. Badly handled by Modell’s. I guess in the future I’ll have to ignore the rules or be ready to.
Susan, Amy, and anyone who has not posted,
We are sorry to hear about your negative experience at our event this weekend. The athlete was indeed under a separate, exclusive agreement which is why all autographs were to be restricted to the pre-approved photo provided at the event. No exceptions were to be made by the staff on and we are surprised that they were. It sounds as though an effort to satisfy some of the customers left others (like yourselves) disappointed – understandably so. Again we apologize for any inconsistencies and disappointment you experienced. We hope we will still see you in the store in the future.
Sincerely,
Modell’s Sporting Goods
I was near the end of the and got a baseball and photo signed. Very nice clean autographs. GO SOX!!!
Sorry….Comment # 4 was the Papelbon signing.
