For years the elite QB class was limited to just two members, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. A third member is now active, Drew Brees. Truth is, he should have been a member way before his 5 touchdown dismantling of the New England Patriots, but because of his team’s previous records, his performance was written off.
Now I am not going to say the Chargers were dumb in letting him go, simply because a very able Phillip Rivers stepped in and produced. I will though chastise nearly every other NFL franchise (except the Dolphins who went after him hard when he was a free agent) who basically written him off as a starting QB after his horrific injury at the end of the 2005 season.
The only team willing to fully believe in him was the Saints. He signed with them because they were the only team regarding him as a possible franchise savior. He has done everything in his power to reward them for trusting him. Since joining the Saints, he has two Pro Bowl appearances, an AP Offensive Player Of The Year, 2 passing yards titles, 1 passing touchdown title, and twice led the league in yards per game. This season is no different story, he is on pace to own another Pro Bowl appearance, passing yards title, and possible MVP award.
At 11-0 the Saints are going to try and do what the Patriots couldn’t do, which is the Perfect Season. He has all the tools in place and if Monday’s game is any indication of what they are capable of, the rest of the league should be scared of them right now. With just five games to go and two playoff games (both should be at home), we could be watching history right now.
As far as his cards go, they went from the common bin to big time in a relatively short time frame. Currently his autographed cards are selling for of average of nearly $70. When you consider how accomplished he is and that he may go down as one of the greatest QBs to ever play them game, that price is not bad. Now take in the fact that Brady and Manning’s autographs average 2 1/2 times Bree’s value then you realize that Brees cards are going to go up. Don’t believe me? Just take a look at his pit.com 52 week pricing index of his 2001 finest RC <link>. His cards will only go up from here and if he manages to guide the Saints team to an undefeated season, his cards will hit the same level as Manning and Brady as far as value goes.

Thank you for this. I took vacation time to make sure I was home in New Orleans to be in the Dome for this game. I have been to many games and the display put on by Breesus and the Saints was one of the best ever. We all had a hope he would be better than Bobby Hebert after the surgery but now he is seen as an all time Saints great.
Like I said he is elite now and if you are building a franchise, he would be the second QB taken after Manning. He is more valuable than Brady and Rothlisberger at this point in their careers.
I agree, Brees can be listed as one of the reasons the Saints are now for real in the league. He does deserve more credit though, it seems as if people ignore him compared to some of the other top QBs.
I would add Brett Favre to the elite QBs list. I still believe a QB needs to be in Super Bowl to be considered “elite”. Brees is getting there.
