Last year there were a lot of young pitchers that got a lot of press.  Guys like Rick Porcello, David Price, and Tommy Hanson just to name a few.  However one of the most overlooked rookies of 2009 was Ricky Romero.  It might be because he plays in Toronto, where so many would be superstars never seem to get widespread recognition.  Of course this is all going to change, and it’s all due to one magnificent outing for the budding star.

On Tuesday, Ricky nearly threw a no-hitter.  He pitched 8 innings, struck out 12 and walked 2.  The only hit he let up was a home run to former teammate Alex Rios.  Ricky’s mechanics were excellent, his control was fantastic, but most of all he has proved that he is the new ace of this you Blue Jay’s team.

Last season was an up and down year for Ricky.  He posted a winning record at 13-9 however his ERA was 4.30 and his WHIP was 1.52.  His biggest problem was hitters seemed to know what was coming from Romero as they posted a 0.287 batting average against him.  So far this season it’s been a different story.  Romero is only allowing 0.120 average against him.  Although it has only been two starts so for this season, there is a noticeable difference in his on mound demeanor and the way he attacks hitters.  Where last year he seemed unsure of himself, this year he has the attitude of an ace.

Obviously the Blue Jay’s brass thought highly of him, taking him 6th overall in the 2005 draft however after four years in the minors, posting lackluster numbers, they had to be second guessing themselves.  Romero rewarded their patience and now seems like the pitcher they envisioned him to become when they drafted him.  He may never develop into a Roy Halladay type pitcher, but he should give the Blue Jays a strong arm that will sit in the 1 or 2 spot in the rotation for years to come.

As far as his card values go, a month ago you could have had any of his autographs for $2 – $5.  After Tuesday’s performance, they are now selling for between $25 – $50.  As with the case of any young pitching product, you should always wait for the fall.  The card pictured below could have been had for $0.99 three days ago, now sells for $27.  His cards are very overvalued right now, give him a month and see what they drop to.

I picked up his ’05 draft blue refractor auto last year for about $40. I’ll be listing it soon to see what kind of profit I can turn.
