What’s astonishing to me is that Colt McCoy’s NFL career has already been declared dead, before the guy ever takes a meaningful snap.  While that might be true, this week may be where the former University of Texas quarterback gets his first taste of the NFL.

Last Sunday both Seneca Wallace and Jake DelHomme possibly out with injuries, McCoy is the lone quarterback left on the roster.  This means that if Wallace is a no go this week, they will be bringing in a new quarterback.  The question is who?  I mean I know that JaMarcus Russell is still available, or maybe Daunte Culpepper?  I just don’t see any QB out there right now that could step in and make an immediate impact.

So that brings us back to Colt McCoy.  Chances are , if Wallace is a no go, he will be getting the start.  I think if Max Hall can hold his own against the reigning Super Bowl Champs, then why not McCoy.  He clearly has the talent to be in the NFL, the question has always been whether or not he has the brains.

Texas quarterbacks are a lot like Texas Tech quarterbacks, throw one in the system and watch as he rolls up thousands of yards passing and between 30 to 40 touchdowns.  As a general rule of thumb, system quarterbacks don’t do well in the NFL and unfortunately for McCoy, there are a lot of nay sayers out there that feel just that way.

The Browns aren’t a bad team, the certainly have a bruising back in Peyton Hillis, and wide receivers Cribbs and Massaquoi.  The defense has been at times brilliant but mostly tired due to a sputtering Browns offense.  If there is one thing Holmgren can do, it’s put together a winner, and find quarterback cast-offs that turn into great quarterbacks.  Holmgren knew what he was doing drafting McCoy and soon people in Cleveland will be singing another tune.

As for Colt’s hobby value, like every other quarterback that has a rookie card this year, is going for some high cotton.  Most of McCoy’s autographed cards are going for between $20 – $40.  The one pictured below from the Finest set recently went for 34 dollars.  If he does well in his first start, expect the cards to soar, however the reverse is also true, if he fails, the cards could be worthless.  In my opinion, it’s not worth the 35 dollar hit to see if he excels.  However I do wish him luck this week, at Pittsburgh, he is going to need it!

Funny that you mention that, I think he has a chance of being the second NFL football player ever to die on the field this weekend. I think the Steeler defense may actually Kill Him. – That is a great card though, after the game his auto should be worth more.
