One of my biggest beefs with the industry is the lack of top end products that are affordable. Paying $500 a pack is just not feasible to most of the collectors out there. On the other hand, there was a time of the $80-90 a pack sets, like Upper Deck Sweet Spot that have seemed to go away. Sure there is still Topps Finest and Bowman Sterling, but they have increased in prices over the years and the product has failed to deliver year in and year out.
The industry has become very polarizing. Either you are spending $70-80 for a hobby box of “low end” product or $200 – 500 for high end product. There is no more “middle class” in card collecting. That’s why 2010 Topps Supreme has become very interesting. For between $80 – $100 a box (which is really just a pack) you get some very nice looking cards and a chance at a very solid hit. The cards definitely seem like a high end product so that you feel you are getting your money’s worth.
In the end though it is completely a chance, like everything else in the hobby world today. The box breaks I have seen on this product a re pretty hit and miss. Either you find a $20 card or a card worth hundreds and it seems fairly random.
A quick look through eBay tells me that this is very hot on the secondary market. Even the base cards are running between $3-5. Tebow and Bradford base cards are running over $12 each. In my opinion those are some very strong numbers. As far as the other items I have seen, most anything with an autograph is running $20+, patch autographs are pulling in $50+, booklets are pulling in $150+. To me that means that the set right now is hot and might continue to be until the next draft.
With a solid price point and a secondary market that is taking off, this might become the hit Topps so desperately needs. Here are some photos of some of the cards from the set:
